Just as the advent of the modern printing press completely revolutionized the method and rate at which we circulated information and ideas, social media platforms have once again changed our world by connecting its inhabitants both nationally and internationally — in an instant!

So-called “breaking news” nowadays has a very short shelf life, because within mere moments, a big news event will be widespread common knowledge from simply trending on Twitter. A video that was shot in one small corner of the earth can quickly reach mainstream consciousness from going viral on YouTube.

Therefore, acknowledging these undeniably effective media, it’s important to understand that these new means of spreading information have affected the way we communicate, both on a personal level and in our business-related interactions.

These facts lead to a logical trend whereby many companies worldwide are trying to harness the power of social media to further their business concept. What power? Consider these numbers: In Facebook’s second quarter report from July 2013, the social media titan reported that it had 1.15 billion monthly active users and 699 million daily active users. Facebook’s mobile monthly active users were reported at 819 million. And though Twitter releases its statistic less frequently, in 2011 Twitter reported that it had more than 100 million active users worldwide.

Facebook and Twitter are the top dogs when it comes to social media marketing. Countless companies are tapping into the power of Facebook and Twitter, in hopes of promoting their products and connecting with their clients. But Harvard Business Review reports that out of 2,100 companies, only 12 percent of companies believe they’re using social media effectively, while 43 percent consider themselves ineffective users.

In June of 2013, the Monetate Ecommerce Quarterly’s first quarter report shows that the use of tablets and smartphones nearly doubled since June of 2012. According to “The Mobile Economy 2013” by A.T. Kearney, 3.2 billion people use mobile communications. The trend is shifting from traditional desktop — and even laptop usage — to more portable devices, like smartphones and tablets.

It is doubtful that in the early days of social media people saw the tremendous marketing potential social media held. Today many of the world’s largest companies have pages on Linkedin, Facebook and Twitter, taking advantage of the large user base and reach these sites offer. There is no doubt that social media provides a ready and sometimes interested consumer base.

I am a Social Media Expert…

A Social Media Expert… how can you become one too? You see it on many profiles and you hear it announced on podcasts… but how and who gave these people this title and where can I get one too???

I often see profiles on social networking sites and bloggers, who are self-proclaimed social media experts. As you look more deeply into that person’s content and personal sites you realize, “Hey if this person is an expert then I must be an uber expert. I should really tell people what I know.”

So based on my research, I have devised a plan that will make you an expert in less than two days:

1. Own a blog – Congrats you are now a blogger!
Now tell people exactly what is on your mind at the moment; typically something about how you don’t really know what to say and it’s your first post.

2. If you haven’t already, sign up for Myspace and Facebook. Post an awesome picture of yourself. Invite and add everyone from your gmail emailing list to be your friend.

3. Sign up for a Twitter account and update with something along that lines of: “Hello! This is my first tweet.” Consider uploading a cartoon avatar of yourself. Follow everyone you see and message them all to view your blog. If you do not notice any new comments within 24 hours, direct message and tweet those same people in increments of 30 minutes. Keep this up for as long as you can. (You are quite the networker!)

4. Announce to the world that you are now a social media expert! Post it as the 1st sentence on every one of your online profiles.

5. Congratulations! Now smile,  because you are part of an elite group of social media gurus. Yay!
